One of the many incarnations of the supreme Lord Krishna is oṁkāra, as stated in the Bhagavad-gītā: “Amongst vibrations, I am the syllable om.” (Bg. 9.17) This signifies that oṁkāra is not separate from Krishna.

However, some impersonalists may give more importance to oṁkāra than to the Personality of Godhead, Krishna. The truth is that any representative incarnation of the Supreme Lord is as good spiritually as the Supreme Lord Himself, and there is no difference between oṁkāra and the forms of Vishnu.

While both oṁkāra and the forms of Vishnu are equally valid spiritually, the common man can benefit more by meditating on the form of Vishnu in the temple. Some individuals who are not familiar with the science of Absolute Truth may attempt to differentiate between the forms of Vishnu and that of oṁkāra, creating unnecessary discord.

Can I chant Om / Omkara Mantra?

If you want to chant Om/Omkara or any mantra that starts with “Om” you need follow all the regulative principles strictly as mentioned below:

  • No illicit sex
  • No Gambling 
  • No meat eating 
  • No Intoxication 

Also, you should not have any sexual thoughts while chanting the “Om” mantra. Since “Om” is an impersonal representation of “Visnu”, one needs to be highly careful otherwise one commits a great offense while chanting. 

Thus, in order to avoid these offenses, one can chant the “Hare Krishna” Mantra which is a personal representation of Krishna/Visnu and it has no offenses like “Om” 

One can anywhere, anytime chant the Hare Krishna mantra and yet derive 100 times more spiritual benefits than one gets by chanting “Om”
